Did you know that approximately 200,000 plastic bottles and bags are used every second globally—enough to circle the Earth seven times? Most of this plastic ends up in landfills or the environment, where it can take hundreds, sometimes up to 1,000 years, to break down. Even then, it never truly disappears. Instead, it breaks into tiny fragments called microplastics, which pollute our soil, waterways, and air. These particles are eaten by wildlife (and humans), contaminate our food chain, and have even been detected in human bloodstreams, raising serious concerns about long-term health effects.
By cutting back on single-use plastics—like water bottles, cutlery, and straws—we can all make a meaningful impact. Another area that often goes overlooked, however, is household cleaning products, which contribute a huge amount of plastic waste through cleanser bottles, plastic sponges, and garbage bags. The good news is, there are easy swaps: refillable bottles and cleaning tablets instead of buying new bottles each time, compostable garbage bags, and reusable cloths to replace disposable sponges.
That is why I was excited to try Plastno, a Canadian brand offering sustainable options like compostable garbage bags, refillable cleaning tablets, and reusable sponges and sponge cloths. I tested them in my own home and here is my honest review.
First Impressions: A Mission I Can Get Behind
I love a company that is truly committed to sustainability, and Plastno seems to be just that. All their products are made from renewable, plant-based materials and designed to break down without leaving toxic residue. Even their shipping packaging was 100% compostable or curbside recyclable (love that!). That is always a sign to me that the company is serious about its mission, not just “greenwashing” for marketing purposes.
Trying out the Compostable Garbage Bags

The compostable garbage bags were the item I was most interested in trying. (I’m in my thirties, these are things we care about now). I already try to reduce my single-use plastic use and use compostable alternatives as much as possible. But garbage bags were one that was just hard to find a good option for that didn’t leak, etc.
Overall, I love that the bags include a built-in drawstring, which makes tying them up super easy. They also feel MUCH more durable than any compostable bags I’ve used in the past, and it gives me peace of mind knowing they are not made from petroleum-based plastic and will eventually break down.
The only thing to note: they are not home-compostable (it says right on the bags themselves that they are commercially compostable only), so I won’t be putting these in my at-home compost pile. But for everyday garbage or commercial pick-up for your compost from your city, they are an excellent alternative to plastic.
Refillable Cleaning Products and Reusable Sponge Cloths

Plastno also makes refillable cleaning tablets and reusable sponge cloths.
I am already a big fan of tablet-style cleaners because they let you reuse the same spray bottle instead of buying new plastic each time. With Plastno, you simply dissolve a tablet in water in the reusable plastic bottle they provide, and you are good to go. I found it worked well on mirrors, counters, and even floors.
The reusable sponge cloths were equally impressive — absorbent, durable, and easy to wash. One feature that I like is that the sponge cloths are double-sided, with a natural fiber scrubber on one side, and a sponge on the other. And when they eventually wear out, you can compost them.
Price and Value
Plastno is not the cheapest option out there for cleaning supplies, but I believe you are paying for:
- Higher quality, sustainable materials
- Reduced plastic waste
- The convenience of home delivery
- A company that actually cares to make good products
Plastno’s membership discount also helps offset the cost (10% off all orders and free shipping!), and for me, the environmental benefits are worth the investment.
Final Verdict: Worth the Switch
If you are looking for simple swaps to your daily routines that make a real difference for our planet, I believe Plastno is worth trying for yourself. Their products are practical, effective, and much kinder to the planet than traditional options available at the grocery store.
It might seem like “just” garbage bags, a cleaner, and some cloths — but small changes like these add up fast.
If you are looking to swap your conventional products for more sustainable ones with no single-use plastics, definitely give Plastno a try. Let’s all work together to support sustainable products and make single-use plastics a thing of the past.
